Uses of Augmented reality (ar)

IN SITU: Aiding sale by seeing projects placed in the environment virtually before completion. For example 1) real estate agents can scan and show an empty house full of stylish furniture or 2) an architect can show the billion dollar client the skyscraper as a model perfectly aligned with the other buildings on the empty site and 3) customers who want to see what clothes look like on them virtually prior to purchase.

TRAINING: Hands-on training for complex equipment, work scenarios, bomb disposal, surgery, flight simulation, and more using AR outline recognition.  According to Wikipedia the actual phrase Augmented Reality was coined by Tom Caudell in 1992 while at Boeing where workers trained to wire aircrafts on AR systems.

LOCATION LAYERS: It provides capabilities for blended guides to new places, enhanced tourism and travelling, as well as information overlays for any themed space. For travelers that just arrived at your city, theme park or any other location, you can provide them with pay for tools that will help them take the most mutually beneficial route after they arrive, as well as become more informed about their surroundings with up to date location information.

VIRTUAL DEMO: AR allows you to have the capability to display or promote the sale of a product in pre-release or remotely via catalogue etc. We may see future stores displaying the majority of items on the shop floor as AR while the item is shipped to your house before you get home! An AR catalogue provides consumers with pop up models that enable them to help build or see a product in 3D.

EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION: Pay-per-visit educational services to museums, ancient sites, theme parks, zoos, etc. Pay-per-visit (ppv) services provide increased levels of information and visual stimuli that increase new information retention as well as providing a simpler more effective learning process.  There are the virtual capabilities to bring anything to life, whether it is for learning about the different species of dinosaurs in a museum, learning about animal diets while you are at the zoo, or about the history of weapons used in the Civil War while you are visiting an old battlefield, the possibilities are endless.

3D VIRALS: Branded company or personal promotions & ads using innovative cool 3D toys. Pattern based 3D models that entertain and can be spread virally. AR allows you to flood your company message or advertisement anywhere from magazines, quirky give a ways, and bill boards, to stadiums and store fronts.  It can give you the YouTube moment as a million views of your cool interactive advertisement in 3d space launches you to record setting sales and worldwide brand recognition.

BLENDED BRANDING: The equivalent to hoardings and virtual poster ads. AR devices can deliver the potential for topical, timely information, and relevant ads to be branded into any scene such as at a bus stop or in a sports arena.  Care must be taken as AR spam (like social network spam) will quickly irritate, but like free to air TV, using various sponsored or freemium biz models, will mean a certain amount of branding will be acceptable.

AUGMENTED EVENTS: Pay-per-use information at any event. At live events spectators will have the ability to pay for services that allow them to have the capabilities to scan their surroundings for the latest information on sports athletes statistics, gossip, tracking trails, sport replays, and anything else desired, all merged over say a static real sporting scene.

INTERTAINMENT: New form of experiential TV and films. With AR there are the possibilities of a new innovative entertainment that will give you the opportunity to have new experiences and adventures that used to seem impossible.  Semi customized markers or location AR apps will layer Brad or Angie into your lounge, onto the coffee table, or you are actually composited in real time into the latest Mixed Reality TV show. Combined with 3D viewing technology, this will make Blu-Ray seem so 18th century.

UNDERSTANDING SYSTEMS: Creating AR for internal or exploded views of complex objects. Primarily useful in training or helping sell something, where physically taking it apart is not a possible view, i.e. a car engine or a computer.  Labels or even an exploded view in real time can help get the message across.
